Reflection of the Writing and Editing Process

While I was not really given a choice in taking ES1102, it has certainly been a rewarding learning journey. I am able to improve on aspects of writing that I am weak in, namely grammar and structuring ideas.

I feel that I am now able to better address the question or topic given, and structure my content accordingly. On top of that, I have also learned more about the language and grammar. These are things that are taught since I was still in primary school, however some are not made clear to me last time, and revising it has helped to make it clearer.

The curriculum for ES1102 is very effective and I have learnt a lot. However, I think that there are a lot of homework and exercise that we need to complete.

My weaknesses are that sometimes I am unable to structure a clear flow of idea to support my point. I realize the same problem repeating a few times from my summary to my cause and effect essay draft. Besides that, I sometimes lack ideas to form points for essay. Although the internet now allows me to search for information easily online, I think that I would need to read more and increase my general knowledge.  Lastly, I feel that I lack an extensive vocabulary and because of this I tend to repeat the same words throughout the essay or writings.

For my reader responds, I did not make the changes in the first draft because I was not aware that it was too long. This is because I excluded all the cited sources from the word count. After knowing the problem, I edited my second draft.

After looking through my previous homework, I realize that I still tend to make careless grammatical error and sometimes not very clear flow of ideas. Generally my grade were quite accurate and there are still more that I need to work on
The audio feedback is definitely more effective than the written feedback. Visual and audio feedback are more clear in a way that it is able to tell more than just a few line of words. I think that an audio feedback would be very useful in my other courses as well. It will be able to clearly state an idea, without the need to read through lengthy words.

Reflective Writing

After starting my journey at university, I thought it would be the same as all the previous schools and examinations, but I soon realise that it is far from being the same. Being a student from the science stream, architecture is very different from what I thought. To me, science is very straight forward because a scientific fact will never change, however architecture includes a very broad range of fields and how it all comes together depends on the architects. The most difficult part for me is the artistic part of it, being a very scientific person it was a struggle to get through the first semester in year one as the assignments were very abstract.

While design is never a straight forward process, a broad range of knowledge is needed to better address the different problems presented by the site and the needs of the client. Reading helps to increase our knowledge and understanding of the different fields, such as medicine, maths, physics and psychology, and only through continuous investigations that we can merge the different disciplines together and come to a solution that best address the problem.

Although I did not do well in the first semester, I realise that there are so much more that I need to learn and it was a very interesting learning process that is completely different from the text book memorising method that I used to adopt. There is a saying that 'when there is a will, there is a way', there are so much more that I need to learn and it is my goal to work harder from now on to better equip myself and hopefully be a better architect in the future.
